Kharif fields wait on canal water as the rain refuses to settle

Paddy farmers in parts of Payakaraopeta and Nakkapalli mandals of Anakapalli district are entering a difficult stretch of the kharif season, with local reporting on Sunday, August 30, describing weak rainfall, delayed transplantation and a growing dependence on canal water.

The affected belt includes a reported ayacut of roughly 8,000 acres. Farmers said rain-fed fields had not received the sustained water needed to proceed normally with paddy transplantation and asked authorities to continue canal supplies until rainfall becomes dependable. Official weather observations for August 30 also showed no recorded rainfall at Payakaraopeta and Nakkapalli stations, supporting the immediate picture of a dry day in the area.

The problem is not simply whether water is available somewhere in the system. Timing is critical in paddy cultivation. If nursery plants are ready but fields cannot be prepared and transplanted at the right stage, farmers can lose part of the season even if water arrives later. A delayed crop can also push harvesting into a less favourable weather window and increase costs.

That is why the farmers’ demand focuses on continuity rather than a one-time release. An irrigation schedule that stops before reliable rain returns can leave fields halfway through preparation. Authorities need to state how much water can be supplied, for how long, which reaches will receive it and whether the available canal flows are sufficient for the entire ayacut.

There is a wider Polavaram context around the region’s irrigation network, but Sunday’s issue should not be confused with future ceremonies or larger project promises. The immediate question in Payakaraopeta and Nakkapalli is whether cultivators can complete this season’s field operations without losing the crop calendar.

A transparent local water roster would help. Farmers should be told release timings, rotation arrangements and any constraints at the source or along the canal. That would allow them to coordinate land preparation, labour and transplantation instead of waiting on informal information.

The report did not establish the total acreage already lost, and no such loss figure should be assumed. Nor does one dry Sunday prove a seasonal rainfall deficit on its own. What is clear is that farmers were reporting insufficient field moisture at a sensitive stage and were relying on canal water as a bridge.

For an agricultural household, that bridge is the difference between a delayed operation and a failed season. The next meaningful update will be whether water actually reaches the tail-end fields for long enough to keep the kharif crop moving.
