Kurnool flags off 30 electric garbage vans of 91 sanctioned for the corporation

Industries Minister T.G. Bharath Gupta and Swachh Andhra chairman Kommareddy Pattabhi Ram on 2 September 2026 flagged off electric garbage vehicles at Konda Reddy Buruju in Kurnool city.

Ninety-one e-garbage vehicles have been sanctioned for the Kurnool Municipal Corporation; the first batch of 30 went on the road that day. The Minister placed the launch under Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s directives. The new fleet is meant to replace poorly maintained old vehicles. Door-to-door collection is already under way; the pitch is faster collection and a cleaner environment.

The same stage widened the claim from one city to the State: a modern garbage system across all municipal corporations. For Kurnool specifically, a 15-megawatt waste-to-energy plant is to be established within KMC limits. About ₹140 crore has been allocated for corporation development, with an additional ₹100 crore for parks, roads and drainage.

Kurnool’s sanitation politics is the gap between door-to-door already running and a fleet described as poorly maintained. Electric garbage vans are meant to close that gap without adding diesel smoke in dense wards around Konda Reddy Buruju — the old fort landmark used as the launch stage. If the remaining 61 vehicles arrive, the corporation can talk of a full sanctioned fleet. If they do not, 30 is a pilot with a press note.

The 15-megawatt waste-to-energy line is the heavier promise. A plant inside municipal limits is a siting fight as much as a power project: feedstock, odour, ash, and whether door-to-door wet waste actually reaches a hopper. The 2 September record announces the intent; it does not publish a site survey or a tariff. ₹240 crore in combined corporation and parks-roads-drainage allocations is the municipal money attached to the day, still described as allocated.

For residents, the test is whether the 30 vans shorten the wait at the gate. For the corporation, the test is whether 91 sanctioned becomes 91 working.
