A poclain at Athara Seedi opened a stone-capped mouth. How far it runs is not a measurement this desk has.

A poclain at Athara Seedi opened a stone-capped mouth. How far it runs is not a measurement this desk has.

On Thursday evening a machine opening the ground beside Golconda Fort found a mouth that was already old. Golconda Artillery officers were levelling land with a poclain for Agniveer training at Athara Seedi when a tunnel appeared. Work was stopped. The Archaeological Survey of India was informed.

The public card says the opening is covered by large stone slabs and that a passage appears to continue inside. Appears is the honest verb. Continues is not a measured length. This desk has no metre-count and will not invent one. It has no treasure and will not invent a chest. It has no proven road to Charminar and will not print one.

Locals crowded the site. Police put up a picket. A crowd and a picket are what a Thursday evening find produces. They are not an ASI report. The card itself asked how far the passage runs and whether historic traces would be found. Those remain questions. This desk will leave them as questions.

Karwan MLA Kausar Mohiuddin shared the find on Thursday evening, 20 August. He wrote that alleged illegal excavation by Army officials at the 400-year-old Qutb Shahi graveyard and playground at 18 Seedi — the same Athara Seedi — had exposed a tunnel. On AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi’s instructions, he contacted the ASI superintendent. Alleged illegal excavation is his allegation. It is not yet established. The Army’s comment was awaited. This desk will not write an Army admission that has not arrived. It will not name the ASI superintendent, because the card does not.

Athara Seedi is disputed ground. The Army claims it. Residents bury there. The ground between Kala Chabutra and Athara Seedi is used for cricket. A graveyard, a claim, a playground, a pitch — four uses on the same ground. A poclain sent for Agniveer training walked into that argument. The argument was already there. The stone slabs are what is new.

Past “tunnels” at Golconda have turned out to be short passages or parts of buried palaces. Similar finds have often been drains, cellars or buried remains. A long-distance Golconda–Charminar tunnel has never been conclusively proved. Those three caution sentences are the culture file, not a spoilsport line.

ASI is expected to inspect age, purpose and extent. Expected is not completed. Age, purpose and extent are the three things the inspection is for. Until that inspection is written, Qutb Shahi period is how the opening has been described, not how it has been dated in a report this desk has read. About 400 years is the age attached to the graveyard, not a laboratory date on the slabs.

The Thursday evening find moved through Friday and Saturday desks. A 21:58 IST Friday filing is live-today that stays on the 22 August paper. The passage does not grow longer because the masthead changed.

What this desk will not do is give the tunnel a length, a map to Charminar, a hoard, or a closed finding of illegal excavation. It will not write that the Army has answered. It will not write that ASI has already ruled on age. It will not invent a second mouth, a staircase count, or a Qutb Shahi king’s name beyond the dynasty already on the card.

The honest picture is Athara Seedi, also called 18 Seedi, beside Golconda Fort. A poclain. Agniveer training. Thursday evening, 20 August. Stone slabs. A passage that appears to continue. A crowd. A police picket. A Karwan MLA who called ASI on the AIMIM president’s instruction. A disputed Qutb Shahi graveyard about 400 years old. Cricket between Kala Chabutra and the seedi. An Army comment awaited. An ASI inspection pending. A Charminar legend that has never been proved.

Until ASI writes age, purpose and extent, the opening is an opening. Until a tape is laid, the passage has no length on this page. Until a court or a report establishes the excavation allegation, the allegation stays an allegation. That is the whole of the culture file.
