The prefix came from a 1950 Telugu title. On Friday the curtain she had already named came down.

She had already named the exit. Five years ago she said life is uncertain, that you have to leave when the curtain is down, that her only wish was to be prepared and go peacefully. On Friday, 21 August, Sankaramanchi Janaki died at a private hospital in Chennai. She was 94.
The screen knew her as Sowcar Janaki. The prefix was not a studio invention in the later decades. It came from the first film. In 1950 she debuted in the Telugu picture Shavukaru, directed by L.V. Prasad. The title became the name that distinguished her from V.N. Janaki. A debut title that becomes a lifetime prefix is a rare kind of billing. This desk will not invent a role-name from that 1950 picture, because the card does not give one.
She worked more than 400 films, across seven decades, in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada. Four languages. Seven decades. More than 400 titles. That is the locked span. This desk will not fill it with a filmography the card has not listed. An obituary that invents pictures is a second billing the dead woman did not ask for.
The last appearances the public card names are two. In Telugu, Anni Manchi Sakunamule, directed by B.V. Nandini Reddy, in 2023. In Tamil, Santhanam's Biskoth, in 2020. A 2023 Telugu film and a 2020 Tamil film are the end of a 1950 beginning. Between Shavukaru and those two titles sit the unnamed hundreds. They will stay unnamed here.
She received the Padma Shri in 2022. That is the national honour locked on this card. This desk will not add a State award, a filmfare line, or a lifetime-achievement night that is not here.
She is survived by three children, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Those are the family numbers. No name among them is on the card. This desk will not invent a son, a daughter, or a household address.
Nadigar Sangam president Nassar confirmed the death. Her mortal remains, he said, would be placed at Centoph Road, Teyampet, from 5 pm. Those are his sentences. This desk will not write a funeral hour beyond that 5 pm placement, or a cremation ground the card does not name.
She had been admitted to Kauvery Hospital, Alwarpet, earlier in the week for intensive care. She died of age-related complications. Age-related complications is the medical phrase as given. It is not a named organ failure. This desk will not supply one.
The 2021 sentence is the one she left for a day like Friday. Life is uncertain. You have to exit when the curtain is down. Be prepared and go peacefully; that's my only wish. An actor who speaks of a curtain is using the oldest metaphor in her trade. On Friday the metaphor closed.
What this desk will not do is retell a famous scene, invent a co-star memory, or lift a still from a photographer's file. It will not write that Chennai came out in a number this page has not been given. It will not turn 400 films into a list of 10 convenient titles. The honest obituary, on a thin card, is the debut, the prefix, the four languages, the seven decades, the two last films, the 2022 Padma Shri, the three generations who survive her, Nassar's 5 pm, the Alwarpet intensive-care admission, and the 2021 wish.
Ninety-four years. A 1950 Telugu first picture. A prefix that lasted longer than most careers. More than 400 films this page will not pretend to have watched for her. A Padma Shri late in the seventh decade. A hospital in Alwarpet. A sangam president's notice. A curtain she had already asked to meet in peace. That is the whole of Friday's record. It is enough, if it is not padded.
