She had already named the exit. Five years ago she said life is uncertain, that you have to leave when the curtain is down, that her only wish was to be prepared and go peacefully. On Friday, 21 August, Sankaramanchi Janaki died at a private hospital in Chennai. She was 94.

The screen knew her as Sowcar Janaki. The prefix was not a studio invention in the later decades. It came from the first film. In 1950 she debuted in the Telugu picture Shavukaru, directed by L.V. Prasad. The title became the name that distinguished her from V.N. Janaki. A debut title that becomes a lifetime prefix is a rare kind of billing.
